Spring fever

Its spring!

For me the middle of Spring is breeding season.
This means lots of horse oriented sex. If theres one thing to take the
romance out of sex for teenagers, I highly recommend having a kid help
with breeding season. Its not fun. Its nervous dangerous work.

If you are the "Person #3 who is to "wrestle the black mamba" into
position to "hit the bull's eye," this is particularly ticklish,
because you are right where the hooves and teeth are, and you have to
trust "Person #2" (the stallion handler, who is managing the boy's
rope) to keep the stud from biting you for touching "the black mamba,"
which is sometimes offensive to a sex-minded stallion. (How would you
feel about a third party suddenly hopping in, and interfering with your
technique?) Now, the ideal place for your teen to participate is as
"Person #1," (which is the mare-holder) because they are out of the
stallion's way, for the most part. On the other hand, this is a place
of responsibility, because they have to hold the mare still, and keep
her from kicking. How to do that? Well usually we put a twitch on the
mare, and dope her out of her mind. This makes her about manageable for
an immature 16 year old, if you make clear that she cannot loosen or
drop the twitch (which she will do at least once, anyway, so be
prepared.) The twitch is a small loop of rope twisted around the end of
the horse's nose, and tightened, as a way of controlling her attention.
When she starts to look like she will kick her lover (many mares will)
You tighten the loop around her nose until it occupies all of her
attention. With her attention thus split between the annoying pinch on
her nose and the sex-offender behind her, she usually chooses the
option of standing still, and groggily accepting the experience.

The stallion i have is what is called a "Gentleman breeder." Kind and
quiet, he will let me lead him away from the mare, and divert his
attention, even interrupt his "approach," to get him a more
advantageous position, or to drug the mare some more. This is a
blessing. Some stallions will kill anything between them and the
promised objective and require two large male handlers, with a chain
under his lip, maneuvering from a distance of up to twenty feet away.
Lucky can be handled by any reasonably agile woman, and is difficult
only about having his privates washed with cold water. He does however
get accross to CJ that once promised ssomething, guys get rather single
minded. Best not to promise, if you dont intend to set the "process" in
motion. Boys of all species can be difficult, that way.

But this whole process de-mystifies sex for the teen, and shows her
what its biological function is. Its to make adorable babies. This
outcome is EXPECTED. It is not what two people who love each other very
much do. (Something her father told her, which irritated me a great
deal. I think this approach renders girls vulnerable to the "Don't you
LOVE me?" angle of the wheedling boyfriend, trying to get in her pants.
) Also, it shows her that she can be an important member of the farm
team. We need her to do an important and somewhat dangerous job, in
order to make our living as horse breeders. She is strong, she is good
enough, she is respected by adults for her part. This is important. She
does not have to get pregnant to have "someone to love her." She has
baby horses for that!

Then, when she looks at the baby next year, she can say "I helped do
that."

I personally consider that participation in a wondrous miracle. How
awesome to help "make a baby!" How awesome for those that care about CJ
to hear her say, "After all this, I cant understand why some of the
girls I know want to do this at parties! Baby horses are so much more
fun to play with, than horny guys. And you know the horses will really
love you forever."

Sadly, no babies due this spring. Just lots and lots of horse sex. Next
year, no less than three babies are due.

For me, this season, is marked by weeds, which have to be mowed.
Jacaranda trees are in full purple bloom. My bare-root roses that I
planted are starting to bloom. The arena needs to be dragged regularly
to keep the weeds from coming up in it. We are starting to need
sprinklers on the grass, and the baby birds are learning to fly in the
hay barn's rafters. (The hay barn is its own eco-system.) This means CJ
is fostering baby birds. She likes this, and about 2 in 5 make it.
She's got to go and feed babies constantly.  As we go along, we are
improving our success. This furthers CJ's understanding that babies are
a lot of trouble, and very helpless as well as demanding
responsibilities. No romance left there, about infant care, as she has
an alarm to help her feed through the night. But it does pay off for
her.

Apocalypse, the grackle, made it, bigtime.

After release, within twenty or thirty seconds,  she had two males
following her around, offering her
shiny objects. This is very fun for cassandra to watch. Its easy to
recognize Apocalypse, because she will dive close and almost land on
nearby objects, or she will walk up, perch on an adirondak chair, and
open her mouth wide, like a baby, demanding food. (Which reminds me of
my thirty year old sister, for some reason.) CJ just knows she
succeeded, and her baby is happy, living a normal grackle life.

For the show barns, this is the time of years to start chasing points
in earnest, so you can qualify for the World championships this fall,
and the two year old colts are all greenbroke, and going up for sale.
Yearling colts are getting gelded, (EEEWWWW!) and the blankets have
changed from warm ones at night, to fly sheets during the day. Mornings
are foggy, and afternoons are starting to get hot. Gatoraide is going
into the fridge in the tackroom. Hot chocolate is RIGHT OUT.

Since CJ has independent studies, so we can home school her, we have no
frenzy of "School's out!" but we do have more friends being mentioned,
as they are more available to play now...(she'd die if she heard me say
"play" but I consider time spent with MY friends "play" so its hardly
condescending.) I think trips to the beach are right around the corner,
but I am too lazy to go there now. Too much Horse Sex to keep up with
here on the farm.
